Heinz Award voor James Nachtwey
James Nachtwey was one of six people named today to receive a Heinz Award.
The annual $250,000 prize is given to people who make notable contributions in the arts and humanities; the environment; the human condition; public policy; and technology, the economy and employment.
The Heinz Family Foundation of Pittsburgh has presented the awards since 1994 in memory of Sen. John Heinz III, heir to the Heinz food fortune who died in a 1991 plane crash.
Nachtwey, the first photographer to receive the prize, did not know he was under consideration. "It came out of the blue", Nachtwey said in a telephone interview. "I am not in the art world, so to speak. I consider myself a documentary photographer. To be recognized for the arts award is surprising."

Als Time-correspondent Michael Weisskopf in december 2003 niet die granaat uit hun Humvee had gegooid, was het die dag met Nachtwey afgelopen geweest. Misschien moet hij maar een deel van die kwart miljoen schenken aan Weisskopf, die sindsdien als een Kapitein Hook door het leven moet.
